Use of readability formulae in question development: March 2005

This report looks at whether it would be both possible and desirable to apply a readability measure to GCSE and GCE examinations by reviewing the relevant literature available in this area, and in particular to examination questions. It also contain a section outlining the use that similar organisations make of readability measures.
This document was published by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). The regulatory function of QCA is now the responsibility of the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual). Ofqual regulates qualifications and monitors national curriculum assessments in England.
